HYBRID II

The jacquard woven piece, woven by Kristina Austi.
Materials: Wool, polyester, viscose.
Size: 165(W)x187(H)cm
Year of production: 2023

The tapestry is a hybrid weave with various colours and patterns that evoke visual and textile contrasts. The natural scene and symbolism are drawn from 16th-century tapestries and the timeless battle between good and evil. This work is part of a weaving series in which Austi explores the relationship between digital and analogue techniques. She feeds algorithms with images, programming them to imitate the style and colours of old tapestries. The algorithms then generate new patterns, which she transfers to the loom and further refines manually through thread manipulation and cutting. The result is a unique artwork that challenges our perception of time and space, highlighting the interplay of analogue tradition and digital innovation in jacquard weaving.” (The description is from the exhibition text at Gallery F15)

The artwork was exhibited at the Exhibition TENDENCIES - In The Right Hands, Gallery F15 in Moss, Norway, in 2024.
